The University of Leicester is a research-intensive university on a compact campus about a mile south of the city centre, established as a university college in 1921 and granted university status by royal charter in 1957. It is known for genetics, where DNA fingerprinting was developed, and for space science and Earth observation, alongside medicine, law, business and the social sciences.
